MIKE Gregory has
been overwhelmed by the support he has received since his
illness was made public.
Flanked by his family and backed by an army of friends and
former team-mates, the depth of the concern for him has been
a reflection of his standing in the game.
The same goes for the legions of people who only knew him from
the vantage point of the stands and terraces.
Mike holds a special place in the public’s affections,
which has been evident by the fund-raising activities which
have raised thousands for his Trust fund... and underlined
the warmth of the human spirit.
Mike said: “Right from the very beginning when people
found out I was ill, they have been amazing.”
The first event was a Hike For Mike, when fans, legends and
rugby league stars marched from Haigh Hall to the JJB Stadium.
That was followed a string of other money-raising events
including Warrington’s benefit match, a triathlon by
Hindley athlete Adele Oliver and dinners and events at Warrington
Wolves, Sacred
Heart, the Beech Tree Pub, Wigan Rugby Union and a function
by Great Britain Lions.
There was also a 150-mile bike ride across the country from
Whitehaven to Sunderland in early 2006, which was led by
Mike’s
friend Chris Hurst and raised a staggering £9,000 for
the Mike Gregory Trust Fund.
And thousands of fans turned out for the Mike Gregory Challenge
match, which was organised by his old amateur club St Pats
and raised nearly £25,000.
